First Awards For Ballast Point’s Little Italy Brewery

R&D Brewery wins 4 of Ballast Point’s 9 awards in San Diego & Los Angeles Competitions
June 16, 2014 (San Diego, CA) – In results announced over the past week, Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits has won nine awards in the San Diego International Beer Competition (SDIBC) and Los Angeles International Beer Competition (LAIBC), including four gold medals.

Notably, these competitions also mark the first awards won by beers brewed at Ballast Point’s R&D brewery in Little Italy.  Three of the four awards were for new recipes developed in research & development: Transatlantic Triple (Silver, LAIBC), The Commodore American Stout (Silver, LAIBC), and Shore Line Cream Ale (Bronze, SDIBC).  The fourth award was an SDIBC Gold medal for Piper Down Scottish Ale, brewed at Little Italy.

“Our R&D brewery has been up and running for less than a year, and clearly we hit the ground running,” said Colby Chandler, Executive Director/Specialty Brewer. “Our goal is to keep developing new award-winning recipes, trying new ingredients, and perhaps create the next great Ballast Point beer.”

At the San Diego International Beer Competition, Ballast Point won two Gold medals, a Silver, and a Bronze:
·      Gold, Calico Amber Ale (Scripps Ranch Brewery)
·      Gold, Piper Down (Little Italy)
·      Silver, Abandon Ship (Home Brew Mart)
·      Bronze, Shore Line Cream Ale (Little Italy, R&D)

At the Los Angeles International Beer Competition, Ballast Point earned two Gold medals, two Silver, and 2 Bronze:
·      Gold, Calico Amber Ale (Scripps Ranch)
·      Gold, Pale Ale (Scripps Ranch)
·      Silver, Transatlantic Triple (Little Italy, R&D)
·      Silver, The Commodore American Stout (Little Italy, R&D)
·      Bronze, Sculpin IPA (Scripps Ranch)
·      Bronze, Three Sheets Barleywine (Home Brew Mart)

The two Gold medals for Calico Amber mark the 18th and 19th awards for that brew, the most of any Ballast Point beer.

“Calico is the first beer we ever brewed, and now we are winning awards for brand-new recipes,” explained Jack White, Ballast Point’s Founder and CEO.  “This recognition shows that our exploration with new recipes continues to yield the great quality beers that we built our brewery on.”
