Grunion Pale Ale wins Gold and Piper Down Scottish Ale takes a Silver Medal

October 5, 2014 (San Diego, California) – Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits earned two medals at the 28th Annual Great American Beer Festival (GABF) held October 3-5 in Denver, Colorado.

Ballast Point’s Grunion won Gold in the American-Style Pale Ale category, the third most entered category of the competition with 145 entries. This is the first award for Grunion, a hoppy Pale Ale which originated last year from an in-house homebrew competition for employees.

In addition, Ballast Point’s Piper Down Scottish Ale received a Silver in the Irish-Style Red Ale category. This marks the third medal for Piper Down.

GABF is the largest commercial beer competition in the world and a symbol of brewing excellence. Medals were awarded in 90 beer categories covering 145 different beer styles, establishing the best examples of each style in the U.S. Winners were chosen from 5,507 competition entries, surpassing all previous participation records.
