Sculpin IPA wins second gold in four years, Navigator Doppelbock takes bronze

April 11, 2014 (San Diego, CA) – Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits has won two medals at the 2014 World Beer Cup, announced during the awards ceremony Friday.

Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA earned a Gold Medal in the International Pale Ale Category, while their 2012 Aged Navigator Doppelbock won a Bronze in the Aged Beer Category.

“Recognition on a global scale is always humbling to us, considering we started as a bunch of home brewers making what we love to drink,” explained Jack White, Ballast Point Founder and CEO.

“Even today, that mentality permeates everything we brew,” White continued. “Sculpin started as an experiment to combine a few home brew recipes, and now it’s an internationally recognized beer.”

This is the second gold medal for Sculpin over the last three World Beer Cups, the first coming in 2010. The 2010 World Beer Cup was a landmark year for Ballast Point, as they were awarded Champion Small Brewery and earned three gold medals for Sculpin IPA, Fathom IPL, and Barrel-Aged Piper Down Scottish Ale.

“Looking back, the 2010 World Beer Cup helped put us on the map,” explained Yuseff Cherney, Ballast Point’s COO and Head Brewer/Head Distiller. “Winning these awards today shows the world that our path of growth hasn’t compromised our commitment to quality and innovation.”

Ballast Point is currently building a 106,000 sq. ft. production brewery, quality lab, and tasting room in the Miramar area to help meet growing demand for its beer. The planned expansion will be the brewery’s fourth location in the San Diego area and will set Ballast Point up to potentially quadruple its production.

The 2014 World Beer Cup was the most diverse World Beer Cup competition yet, with medals awarded to 253 different breweries. Ballast Point is one of only 24 multiple award winners in this year’s competition.
