Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits Collaborates with Japanese Brewery COEDO on West to East IPA

San Diego brewer traveled to Japan to create pan-Pacific collaboration beer

SAN DIEGO, CA (November 28, 2012) – On September 14, brewers from San Diego’s Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits traveled to COEDO Brewery, just outside of Tokyo, for a unique beer collaboration that blends the best of both craft beer cultures. The resulting brew was dubbed “West to East IPA,” a San Diego-inspired IPA with a Japanese twist.

“We never stop exploring new flavors in our quest to make great beer, and this latest journey took us to Japan,” said Jack White, Ballast Point CEO & Founder. “Like in San Diego, Tokyo has a passionate craft beer community, and we were inspired by that.”

The collaboration beer is brewed with Japan’s renowned “Aiyama” Sake Rice and fresh Yuzu peel, then fermented with Cali Ale Yeast from San Diego’s White Labs. A classic hop-forward IPA, it features 7 different varieties in this brew: Magnum and Motueka hops in the boil, and a combination of Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin, Simcoe, Amarillo and Centennial for dry hopping.

“With this collaboration, we really tried to capture a balance of pan-Pacific flavors, starting with hops native to the U.S., Australia and New Zealand” explained Colby Chandler, Ballast Point Specialty Brewer.  “The rice adds a satisfying sushi flavor, and there is a bright citrus finish from the yuzu.”

The collaboration will be available for purchase in 5 gallon kegs at Ballast Point and Home Brew Mart beginning [DATE].
