89 - Ballast Point Brewing Co. Ballast Point Copper Ale, California, USA, 5% (Tasted 12/1998). Amber-orange hue. Medium bodied. Mild bitterness. Sweet, floral aromas have a sweet worty note. Chewy, pure malt flavors have some dextrose sweetness well offset by bitter hop accents. Well balanced, flavor packed.

86 - Ballast Point Brewing Co. Black Marlin Porter, California, USA, 5.5% (Tasted 11/1998). Dark brown appearance. Mild tan colored head, with good retention. Medium bodied. Marked bitterness. Moderate astringency. Bitter hop aromas dominate the nose and follow through on the palate. Chocolatey, dark roasted malts do not quite stand up to the hop bitters. A rather hop-dominated style.

86 - Ballast Point Brewing Co. Yellowtail Pale Ale, California, USA (Tasted 2/1999). Pale yellow gold. Moderately light bodied. Mild bitterness. Fruity, sweet grainy aromas. Well carbonated with pale malt bite on entry that tapers to a clean mildy hop bitter finish. A refreshing, well balanced ale.

THE WORLD BEER CHAMPIONSHIPS

The World Beer Championships is conducted by the Beverage Testing Institute, an independent professional review program that will taste more than 1,000 beers from more than 20 countries, throughout 1998. Tasters consist of selected beverage professionals. The World Beer Championships has gained international recognition for its impartiality and professionalism. All beers are tasted on our premises, using procedures which minimize palate fatigue and psychological biases.

Tastings are conducted on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a panel of five people tasting no more than 35 beers per day. This year-round schedule addresses beers from different regions and countries without over-taxing the tasters by serving too many beers at once. These beers are categorized and tasted according to their style.

Typically, panelists face five flights of seven beers. The beers are served in Riedel stemware and are only identified by a three digit code on the base of the glass. Great care is taken to ensure that faulty samples are not served to the panel. A staff member inspects, tastes, and scores each sample before serving it to the panel.Panelists score on a 14 point hedonic scale, chosen for its ability to accurately represent the precision of the trained taster. Average scores are then converted to an easy to understand 100 point scale with the following award designations:

The World Beer Championship results and reviews are published on the Food & Drink Network on the web at www.tastings.com, and on America Online. In print, they are published monthly as the Buying Guide of All About Beer Magazine, one of the nation's leading nationally distributed beer publications. Condensed portions of our reviews also appear in monthly features for Restaurant Hospitality magazine, the leading trade restaurant magazine. Press releases are also sent out to hundreds of influential beverage writers and retailers. Contact Richard Cooper or Marc Dornan for additional information.
