Sculpin

India Pale Ale

A trophy beer that’s a testament to our homebrew roots.
Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. It showcases bright flavors and aromas of apricot, peach, mango & lemon. The lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin fish is considered some of the tastiest. Something that has a sting but tastes great; sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Grapefruit Sculpin

India Pale Ale with Grapefruit

Our award-winning IPA, with a citrus twist.
Our Grapefruit Sculpin is the latest take on our signature IPA. Some may say there are few ways to improve Sculpin’s unique flavor, but the tart freshness of grapefruit perfectly complements our IPA’s citrusy hop character. Grapefruit’s a winter fruit, but this easy-drinking ale tastes like summer.

Habanero Sculpin

India Pale Ale with Habanero peppers added

Our popular IPA, with a punch of heat.
Our Sculpin IPA with Habanero Pepper began as a crazy experiment that’s taken on a life of its own. While its bright fruit notes and hoppy bite has made the original one of our favorites, this version takes that balance of flavors to the next level with the citrusy, floral heat of habaneros. Sculpin are known to sting, but this one’s got a kick.

Longfin

Lager

A classic German-style beer, brewed in San Diego.
Our Longfin Lager has become one of the go-to beers with the team at the brewery. A solidly balanced Helles that finishes clean with a hint of hops, it would easily fit in at any German beer garden. But we think it’s perfect for enjoying on the beach, the boat or anywhere else you can put an ice chest full of beer.

Inspired by the Helles Style from Germany, this very light colored Lager is big on malt flavor. With the reserved use of hops in bittering, this crisp Lager has the aroma, and flavor of fresh baked bread thanks to the German produced Pilsner Malt. Hell is the German adjective for “light,” while Helles is a noun used in the sense of “a light one.” Unlike the Helles beers of Germany that take time traveling to San Diego, this beer is locally lagered and delivered fresh. You can’t argue the minimal carbon footprint of a World Style being produced locally.

Wahoo

White

A fresh, unfiltered brew perfect for lazy summer days.
Our Wahoo White is brewed with unfiltered, un-malted wheat and oats that give it a distinctive cloudy complexity. True to the Belgian tradition, this Witbier boasts a refreshing, citrusy flavor thanks to the orange peel and coriander we add to the boil. This makes Wahoo an ideal beer for year-round beach weather.

Summer days and ocean waves inspired our Belgian Witbier-styled Wahoo White. Brewed to be crisp, light, and refreshing—with a unique citrus character that comes from adding orange peel and coriander to the boil. What gives our Wahoo White—and other wheat beers—a hazy appearance is the unmalted wheat it’s made from. Special yeast contributes to this beer’s refreshing tangy flavor—quite different from the banana and clove-y Hefeweizens of Bavaria.

Pale Ale

The Original

The beer that launched Ballast Point.
Our original Pale Ale is a rich golden brew, crafted with aromatic German hops and rounded out with a blend of American and Munich malts. While it’s hopped like a lager, we ferment it like an ale to create a smooth, bright taste that has just a hint of fruit and spice. It’s extremely drinkable, like a Kolsch should be, yet complex, like a good craft beer demands.

German-style Pale Ale, inspired by the Kolsch Ales of Cologne, Germany. Our Pale Ale drinks like a Pilsner, only with more body and flavor. It’s no wonder why our Pale Ale is so popular—it is skillfully crafted in the style of the Kolsch beers of Cologne, Germany. We’ve chosen German hops for aroma, and rounded out the recipe with a blend of American and German malts. While it is very much like a Pilsner, our Pale Ale is fermented at ale temperatures, giving it a subdued fruitiness—a perfect complement to the crispness of the wheat and maltiness of the Munich malt. If you like a lighter brew but also like the complexity of craft beers, then our Pale Ale is for you.

Grunion

Pale Ale

A new Pale Ale where hops run the show.
Our Grunion Pale Ale wasn’t born on a beach, but in a backyard.  Originating from an employee-only home brew contest, this award-winning hoppy pale ale is named after the tiny local fish known for late night frolics on shore.  A pair of new hop varieties lend strong yet balanced summer melon aromas and herbal flavors, while a soft caramel malt sweetness holds it all together.

The underlying nutty malt base has hints of toasted bagel and fresh crepes from the use of Marris Otter barley and Carapils malt. Color is deep golden to a light orange.

Fathom

India Pale Lager

Lager meets IPA in a winning combination.
Our Fathom India Pale Lager combines time-honored lagering techniques with the hop profiles of a West Coast IPA recipe. The result is a gold medal beer with a refreshing, easy drinking character and just the right amount of depth.

Despite using traditional Lager techniques (cold fermentation) and a traditional West Coast IPA recipe, this beer is far from “traditional”. The use of a clean fermenting Lager strain cuts out the fruity flavors traditionally added by using warm fermenting Ale yeast. This allows the hops a neutral base for the citrus and pine hop flavors and aromas to shine. We keep some inspiration from European lagers with a malt base that includes both Munich and Vienna malts. Ahtanum is used in large amounts for dry hopping.

Big Eye

India Pale Ale

The beer that helped put San Diego IPA’s on the map.
Our Big Eye IPA is a big hoppy brew, thanks to the abundance of American Columbus and Centennial varieties we use to flavor and dry hop. While the English originally added extra hops to preserve their beers for sea travel, we do it for the love of all that bold, intense flavor that makes India Pale Ale one of our favorite styles.

If you have fallen for the IPA style like we have, Big Eye will be a welcome addition to your repertoire. You’ll revel in Big Eye’s bitter, hoppy flavor thanks to the American Columbus and Centennial hops that are used to flavor and dry hop our flagship IPA. We thank our hops every day that the English loved their bitters—or else the IPA style may not have been born to help the beer survive the journey from Cape Hope to India back in the 18th century.

Calico Amber Ale

Calico

Amber Ale

A rich, copper ale with a case full of gold medals.
Our Calico Amber Ale takes its inspiration from traditional English ESBs. Four types of malts give it a bold complexity, and our proprietary yeast strain lends it a fruity, madeira-like richness. However, it’s the American hops that give this ale a distinct bite and floral aroma that have earned it just about every major beer medal.

Inspired by traditional English ESB’s, our Calico Amber Ale is as American as it gets.  A rich complexity comes from four types of malt—but it’s those distinct American hops that offer a crisp bitterness and unique floral aroma. To round out our traditional-English-yet-very-American Amber Ale, we use proprietary brewer’s yeast to develop a fruity, madeira-like richness.

Piper Down

Piper Down

Scottish Ale

A Scottish ale with San Diego spirit.
Our Piper Down Scottish Ale hits all the right notes for the Ballast Point Bagpipe Corps that inspired it. We created this very low hopped, malty ale for the band to enjoy using UK Maris Otter malt, roasted barley, UK hops and low fermentation temperatures. Then we let the brew’s sweet complexity build over a three-hour boil. Full of roasted caramel flavor, it’s a pub classic with Ballast Point personality.

The Ballast Point Brewing Company Bag Pipe Band was the inspiration behind this Scottish Ale. BPB&S owner Jack White wanted a moderate alcohol, low hopped and malty ale to be enjoyed by the band. Using UK Maris Otter malt, roasted raw barley (no peated malt), UK  Fuggle hops and a three hour boil to add flavors of milk chocolate, toffee and a mild roast. Piper Down pours a clear dark mahogany with candy cane red hues when held up to the light. Look for malt derived aromas of candied sugar, molasses, plum and a little herbal spice from the hops. Yeast influence is kept to a minimum with the ale fermentation taking place at 62 degrees which really lets the malts shine. Occasionally a Piper likes a drink or two. Too many drinks and the Pipes make the Piper a little top heavy. When the oxygen starved and pickled Piper eventually keel’s over, the call goes out loud, “Piper Down”!
