San Diego Microbrewery Ballast Point Brewing Company Wins Gold Medal in International Beer Competition

Wednesday, June 12, 2002 Aspen, Colorado.

Ballast Point Brewing Company was announced as both a gold and a bronze medal winner during the World Beer Cup. The World Beer Cup is the most prestigious global beer competition which recognizes the most outstanding beers being produced in the world today.

Ballast Point Brewing Company won the gold medal in the American Amber Ale category for their Calico Amber Ale.

Ballast Point Brewing Company also won a bronze medal (in the same competition) for their Big Eye I.P.A. (India Pale Ale ).

These awards were preceded by Ballast Point’s Calico Amber Ale winning a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado in 2001.

Ballast Point is a 3000 bbl. per year microbrewery located in San Diego, California, U.S.A. that specializes in handcrafted traditional ales with a distinctive Southern California style.

World Beer Cup winners were selected by an international panel of brewing experts from an impressive field of 1,173 entries received from 379 breweries in 38 countries. The panel only recognizes a maximum of three beers per category, although many categories have numerous award-quality entries.

Finalists in the competition’s 70 beer-style categories are given gold, silver or bronze awards during the World Beer Cup ceremony. Only 138 breweries from 15 countries made it to the finals of the World Beer Cup, adding to the prestige of the award.

"With such a diverse list of entrants and winners, we are confident in saying that the World Beer Cup is truly an international competition that is both capable and skillful at recognizing global beer excellence," states Nancy Johnson, director of the competition. " Without a doubt, a World Beer Cup winner can truly boast that it is one of the best beers in the world."

2001 Great American Beer Festival

Ballast Point wins a Gold Medal at the 2001 Great American Beer Festival in Denver for Calico Amber Ale!

GABF Gold MedalBallast Point Brewing Company Calico Ale received a Gold medal in the American Amber Ale category. For all of us at the brewery this was a very exciting experience. We are very honored to be recognized as brewing one of the best beers in the U.S. In our category there were 71 different Amber Ales entered by some of the finest breweries in America. This category had the third highest number of entries in the entire festival.

The selection process at the GABF is known as Professional Panel Blind Tasting  or PPBT for short. The GABF selects industry Professionals to sit together in small groups (Panel) and without knowing the brand name (Blind), Taste beers. The goal is to identify the best three beers that best represent that beer style. What we enjoyed most was the definition of the Gold Medal: A world-class beer that accurately exemplifies the style, displaying the proper balance of taste, aroma and appearance
